Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that reduces submental fullness (a "double chin") by using deoxycholic acid to destroy fat cells under the chin. It is a non-surgical procedure that requires multiple, brief treatment sessions, and common side effects include swelling, bruising, and pain at the injection site. The results are permanent because the destroyed fat cells cannot store or accumulate fat again. 
What Kybella is and how it works
  • Composition: Kybella contains a synthetic deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that breaks down and absorbs dietary fat.
  • Mechanism: When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella destroys the fat cells. The body then naturally processes and removes the remnants of these destroyed cells. 
The treatment process
  • Injections: A provider will inject Kybella into the fat under the chin. The number of injections per session varies, and a topical or local anesthetic may be used to minimize discomfort.
  • Treatment sessions: You may need between two and six treatment sessions, spaced at least one month apart.
  • Duration: Each treatment session is typically short, lasting about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Recovery: Side effects like swelling, bruising, and soreness are common but temporary. Patients can often resume most activities right away, though strenuous activity may need to be avoided for 24 hours.
